If you were a serious bodybuilder around 1987, you could tell you were in the midst of something new and exciting. Looking back, I now know that it was around this time that the future of the sports nutrition was about to change forever. Sure, some of the advertising and the packaging looked more polished, but the changes were more than superficial.

In what is best described as an underground phenomenon, an elite group of supplement industry mavericks had emerged from obscurity with information that would transcend the needs of the bodybuilding community. Their secret was simple: plow through scientific journals to find ingredients that actually allowed bodybuilders and athletes to become, leaner, and gain more muscle naturally.

Fast Forward To The Future

One of those companies that led the scientific charge was AST Sports Science. Founded by their fearless leader Paul Delia they burst onto the bodybuilding scene with more than a few well-researched products. Recently, I had a chance to speak with Larry Witt the National Sales Manager for AST, and was very impressed to say the least.

[ Vince Andrich ] I am sure I already know the answer to the first question, but humor me (maybe they'll think I'm younger!) and tell our readers when was your company started? Also, why was your company started?

[ Larry Witt ] AST Sports Science was born "AST Nutritional Concepts and Research" in 1987. At the time, products based on science and research were very few and far between. There really were no great options, and AST was created to change all that.

We are one of the original sports supplement companies to create high quality, research-based products for the advanced athlete and bodybuilder. AST wanted to offer these athletes and bodybuilders a variety of products to advance their efforts to the next level.

[ VA ] I mentioned this in my opening, and remember all the buzz surrounding the company "AST", especially hearing rave reviews about how potent your products were at the time. So tell us about your key employees. Who is who and what do they do?

[ LW ] At AST Sports Science each and every employee plays a key role. Every order and question gets handled by some of the best employees in the business. We wear many different hats in our organization and all of us help out in the day to day operations whether it is answering phone calls, packing orders, or creating ads.

We all have our specific roles within the company but our TEAM environment brings many new perspectives and ideas to the table. With out our team we wouldn't be where we are today.

[ VA ] Very cool. I personally believe that the best companies employ people who know and use their own products otherwise they might as well sell widgets. All right, in you opinion what separates your company from the rest of the industry?

[ VA ] I think credibility is key, and AST sets a good example. There are unethical companies in every industry as well as great companies with high standards. The point worth mentioning is that the general public often perceives the sports nutrition industry as one homogenized group of companies.

So when company XX is hocking BS it shines a bad light on all of us. I believe consumers need to show more monetary support for companies that aren't selling miracles, but offer education and products based on reality. If we don't all pitch in, as an industry we'll never grow up.

Now that I am off my "soapbox", let's move on.

Larry, I know our readers want to know what new and exciting products are coming out of AST in the near term?

[ LW ] AST Sports Science is continually researching and developing new cutting edge products. Our latest creation is NRGX. It is a pre-workout amplifier to help increase mental focus, strength and energy levels for the ultimate workout.

This product will be available the first of December. Two of our more recent conceptions are our BCAA 4500 and Myo-D. The BCAA 4500 was created to add the vital branch chained amino acids to the athlete and bodybuilders diet to increase size and strength.
